Marriage Is For Losers

Yes, that title is for real. It definitely catches your attention!

Last week, one of my FB friends posted this link on her page, and I too thought it looked interesting, so I clicked on it. It is written by Dr. Kelly Flanagan, and is one of the greatest things I've ever read about marriage, and serious relationships. If you're married, engaged, thinking about getting married, or in a committed long-term relationship, please take the time to read this. I PROMISE PROMISE it won't disappoint!

In marriage, losing is letting go of the need to fix everything for your partner, listening to their darkest parts with a heart ache rather than a solution. It’s being even more present in the painful moments than in the good times. It’s finding ways to be humble and open, even when everything in you says that you’re right and they are wrong. It’s doing what is right and good for your spouse, even when big things need to be sacrificed, like a job, or a relationship, or an ego. It is forgiveness, quickly and voluntarily. It is eliminating anything from your life, even the things you love, if they are keeping you from attending, caring, and serving. It is seeking peace by accepting the healthy but crazy-making things about your partner because, you remember, those were the things you fell in love with in the first place. It is knowing that your spouse will never fully understand you, will never truly love you unconditionally—because they are a broken creature, too—and loving them to the end anyway.

    1. I know, right?! It seems so simple when you read it, but I can honestly say 100% that if you don't do this stuff, some of these things can become a problem! Just remembering this simple paragraph can make things SO much easier. Amazing.

  3. I love this, and you know I truly believe this too. I look forward to one day experiencing it first hand. You and Pat are one of the couples in my life that inspire me to believe that true, good love does exist.

    1. Thanks Lace! That really means a lot :) Just remember that NO relationship is perfect, and if someone tells you theirs is, they are either denying that there is a problem, or lying to you. We all have our ups and downs, but just remembering what is said in this paragraph and article will make things SO much easier and more clear for your relationship when you actively do these things. You'll find your cowboy someday :)
