When Things Go Bad

While sometimes I like to paint the story of my life on here as all rainbows and unicorns...however, that it is not! You see, when you live on a farm, there are many, MANY things that can go wrong.

A couple of weeks ago, we put the bulls out with the cows to start some babymaking. There are usually several  bulls in with a big group of cows. The bulls like to fight, to establish who is king of the herd.

Unfortunately, this sometimes happens at inopportune times...like when said bull is gettin' it on with one of the ladies. This can be quite disastrous, which is what happened last week. Our bull, Van, was doing his thang, when another bull came up and rammed him in the side. Why is this disastrous? Because when this happens, there is a very high probability that his penis can break. Which is exactly what happened to poor Van the other day :(

So what happens now? He's pretty much worthless. He just roamed around in the field, with a broken man part. We have no use for him anymore since he can't breed with the cows, so we took him to the sale ring today. He'll probably be sold to a feed lot and butchered several months down the road.

It makes me sad, because he's only about 3 years old, and he is just in his prime. But when your primary job is to breed, and you can't do that, ya gotta go. Since there should be a certain number of bulls per cow, next year we'll have to go buy another one. Which is no small expense...Van cost us about $3,000. Fortunately there are about 8 other bulls that are in with the cows, so I can gladly say that there WILL be baby cows in the spring!

Would it be wrong for me to say Happy Hump Day?
